Mission Statement: The Caledonia Grand River Quilters’ Guild is a fellowship, which, through the medium of quilting, promotes social interaction, educational opportunities, artistic development, and community service through each individual’s personal commitment and contribution.

A message from our President: On November 11th I vow to remember our veterans. My Dad was one, my father in-law, uncles, and friends. I am sure we all know someone who served. When the big wars were over they came home to open arms, ticker tape parades and hero welcomes. Today we have Canadians fighting another war for different reasons. I have a relative there and I am almost positive that when that war finally ends there will be no ticker tape parades for them. On the 11th I will remember the past and the present, the ones who have died, the ones who have survived and the ones who are still fighting. Irene

Quilt of Valor – Lydia has made a quilt to be donated to the Quilt of Valour for wounded servicemen and women. Henriette Burtenwerf who owns Country Quilt Shop in Wellandport had very kindly donated the quilt batt for this quilt. Helen Hubert has given us a copy of the pattern she used to make the quilt. See .pdf files attached.

Sewing Days -.-.-.-.On the Wednesday of our meeting, we will continue to have a sewing day, from 9:30 a.m. We will cater-in dinner for 6:00 p.m. Sewing day fee is $5 and dinner fee will be around $15. Let Monica know if you have a food allergy. The general meeting follows at 7:30 p.m.

Do you have too many UFO’s? We have enough interest for EXTRA sewing days STRICTLY FOR WORKING ON YOUR UFO’s. Dates (the 4th Wednesday) from 9:30–5:00: Nov. 26th,
Jan. 28th, March 25, May 27. (Helen Hubert). Cost for anyone joining us is $10.00/day.

WHAT’S NEW IN OUR LIBRARY? I'm planning my book purchasing outings to both The Little Quilt Shoppe and Quilters' Haven in the near future. If you have any suggestions about what books I could try to obtain for the Caledonia Quilt Guild's library, please forward those suggestions along to me.
Suggestions already rec'd: French Braid book, book on stack 'n whack, and book on some items eg: table runners/placements. If you know of titles I should look for, let me know.

“THE DIRTY DOZEN CHALLENGE”, quilt to be *completed by June 2009

“SEW HEAR THIS” … Congratulations!
· Judy Lyons is a certified quilt appraiser and will be our guest speaker on November 12th. Appraisals will be available prior to our meeting. Appointments are scheduled in half hour time slots and the latest appointment will be 5:30. Verbal appraisals are $25.00, written appraisals are $50.00. If you are interested in having an appraisal done, let Helen Hubert know and she will send you the form Judy needs completed beforehand. The deadline to book an appraisal is Friday November 7th. And remember, you will need to be here with your quilt at your appointment time.
· Missing – a turntable cutting mat from a workshop a few months ago, belonging to Lydia.
· Grace United Church has agreed to having our mail delivered to their address. This is great news!

GUILD COOKBOOK – Janet says the cookbook is ready for final checking at the November meeting. The cookbook will be available at the December meeting. Yahoo! Think about this as a great stocking stuffer for your family and friends.

Don’t forget to bring your toonies for our draw table. For tickets, see Lydia before the meeting starts.
Show & Share – bring in your quilted items to Show & Share and your name could be drawn for a free pick out of our “goodie toter”!

TIPS: A Word About Backing FabricRemember quilt backing fabric should be about 6 inches larger than the top. This means if your quilt top measures 50” X 50” the backing fabric should measure 56” X 56”. Never use the selvage edge when constructing any part of your quilt. Another thing to keep in mind is that a single seam running across the back (either horizontally or vertically) will receive a lot of stress. To reduce the stress on the seam and extend the life of your quilt, create a backing with 2 seams in which no seam runs through the middle.

We are now adding the previous month’s meeting minutes to the newsletter. We ask that you read them before this month’s meeting and be prepared to amend/accept the minutes as recorded. By doing this we reduce the time spent reading them at the meeting. This gives us added time for our program. Which, as we all know, “is a good thing”. Thank you.

If you have something quilt-related to sell or advertise in the newsletter let me know by the 1st of each month. The cost is 3 fat quarters or $5 for space, $7.50 for half a page or $10 for a full page. If you know someone who would be interested in advertising in our newsletter please let me know.
